What never fails to make you laugh?

Maybe I'm mellowing but I rather like this question. I mean, it could mean so many things, like what kind of books make you laugh? What jokes make you laugh? What situations make you laugh? It's just a nice way of looking at things.

Of course, as a cynic and a possible pessimist, it could also be used as "What makes you laugh with cynicism? What causes you to give a mocking laugh?"

Though, I'm not typically a one who will give a mocking laugh or a poo-poo-ing laugh. I think it's passive aggressive. If I think something you're doing is stupid, I'll cut you a side-eye or make a "Who farted?" face. There will never be a question as to how I feel.

What makes me laugh? Let's start a list:

Movies:

Beerfest - yes, I know. No, seriously, I know. It's a movie about a beer competition. But it makes me happy, stop judging me)

Blazing Saddles - LOVE this movie. Absolutely love it. I lent it to a friend who's husband had fond memories of it from his youth and so she sat while he watched the movie, watching to see if he laughed. That's so much pressure! Would it surprise you to hear he wasn't able to laugh at any of it?)

Ghostbusters - I'm sorry but if you don't like Ghostbusters, we need to have a serious conversation. I'm not going to judge you for not liking Ghostbusters 2, though I thought it was quite good, but Ghostbusters! Come on! It's a work of genius!)

The Addams Family 1 & 2 - Whatever you think about the second one, Joan Cusack is genius and I love her. Plus her attempts to kill Fester make me laugh like a donkey.)

Team America - What can I say? Besides "Matt Damon!"?

I'm sure there are some I'm missing (though I mostly watch action movies) but those are off the top of my head.

Books:

Dave Berry's Guide to Guys - irreverent and it plays off of stereotypes but it's so good-humoured with this strain of cynicism, it's almost like me, distilled as a comedy book.

... okay, that seems to be it. I mostly read romances and suspense fiction. Some of those are laughs but it's mostly because the writing or situations are really bad.

TV

How I Met Your Mother - I just did a marathon of Season 1 and 2 and it is so funny, mixed with sweet, mixed with booze and topped with whipped cream and cherry. Love.

Big Bang Theory - I wasn't wild about this show when it first came out. I thought all the jokes would be grotesque stereotypes (Oh look! Nerds can't get laid!) but it's not. It's a lot sweeter than that. It feels like the writers like the characters and aren't willing to be vicious or cruel, just for an easy joke.

And... huh. I don't seem to watch a lot of comedy shows either. Mostly action or sci-fi which contain humour but aren't the "traditional" sitcom.

Is this the point where I have to assure you all that I am actually a girl?

And will I have to assure you again when I tell you I also like Family Guy?

As for jokes and things, I prefer jokes that aren't at someone's expense, in the sense that, while I may joke around, I don't like jokes where the heart of the joke is vicious.

How many times can I fit "joke" in a sentence? Damn, no wonder I never cut it as a writer.

I'm not a fan of practical jokes since it seems the basis of those are to make the person look ridiculous. I don't mind a crass joke if it's properly funny, that is, if it's funny in it's own right, regardless of crassness. Though I'll take the occasional poop joke. I like those.

I like word play jokes because it lets me use my brain sometimes.

But mostly, I just like to laugh. I like the weird witch's cackle I get when I'm feeling particularly evil, the weird deep throated laugh that I have no idea when I developed. 

Mmm, funny things. I like funny things.

Hulu, cable, DVR, TiVo... How do you watch your favorite television shows?

Right now? I still have a VCR. I'm looking into buying a DVR but they're kind of pricey. I'm looking at a Sony 160 GB one but I'm trying to do some research on the quality. I've also seen a Pioneer 280 GB (or... wait, is it something else? Anyway, it holds more) for about $100 more. I just don't know about Pioneer as a brand.

I wish I could watch it on Hulu (not available in Canada) or on the network websites (also not available in Canada) but most of the time, if I've missed the shows, I'll catch up on dvds.

I love tv on dvd. Love it.

My friend, the beautiful and talented handtalker, has been really up on this show that I don't think we get in Canada, True Blood. I've heard that Anna Paquin's southern accent is so grating, it's peeling concrete from the sidewalks. But damn. If this is what the show is like? I am SO IN.

I want to be his best friend.

What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall TV season?

Well, it seems that I was really tired this morning and thought that this question only pertained to NEW fall tv shows rather than the new fall season.

I'm going to blame the fact that I catch the bus at 6:45 am.

My favourite returning shows?

House (new Houselets! or Ducklings, however you're used to referring to them! And Kal Penn reportedly one of them? LOVE HIM!)

Supernatural (I joke that this show is about two hot brothers with a hot car hunting ghosts but dude. It's so not. It's so much better than that. It's like describing Buffy as this hot blonde who hunts vampires. You've got the basic gist but none of the really interesting parts!)

Ugly Betty (Santos. My poor Santos. Being a good dad and he gets shot. Now I want to know what happens next. And does that red-headed baby incubator win Henry? Or will Betty fight for his love?!)

CSI: NY (I know, it's considered the most boring of the three but I'll watch pretty much anything with Gary Sinise, evidenced by the fact that I've actually seen parts of Forrest Gump, even though it's not really that good a movie. Plus really hot guys -- and girls -- solving crime? I didn't want to be Nancy Drew for nothing! And that's old school Nancy Drew, not this new one that seems vastly inferior.)

Heroes (I'm pretty sure Peter and ... what's his name survive the explosion. I just want to know who Lt. Uhura is playing on the show. I heard she's going to be on! I wonder if she's a new Hero? Ooooh! Maybe she's going to be the one who can control the weather! She'd be a really hot Storm! All right, so I'm making some things up but she's going to be in the series sometime -- as will my favourite, Kristen Bell -- so really, it's more speculation than outright lying.)

Numb3rs (even though they still do the twee "3" thing and damn, who knew that math could solve so many mysteries?)

How I Met Your Mother (I love Barney and it seems I'm becoming Barney with my king size bed and twin size duvet. Eh, at least they won't stay the night then.)

The Office (JIM AND PAM! JIM AND PAM! JIM AND PAM!)

I'm even kind of looking forward to the trainwreck that is Smallville. I mean, ret-conning it so that Chloe's Kryptonite-infected? Wow, that continuity did NOT get out of the urine stream fast enough! And Lana faking her death to frame Lex? So stupid it's almost genius.

And all right, fine. I don't KNOW that Lana faked her death or that she framed Lex. But after killing Chloe with the one tear falling out to revive Lois? I'm not giving Al/Miles the benefit of the doubt.

Any other suggestions? I'm not really into Prison Break, Lost or some of the other more blockbuster shows. But I'm willing to take arguments for and against different shows.

Seriously, ending the season on a cliffhanger? I'm supposed to wait the 90 billion years until the next season starts? WTF?! Who does she go to Italy with? Is it Brendan? I want it to be Brendan. Though Evan would be nice too. I like him; I think he's Canadian. Or else I've just seen him in a lot of things and just figure he must be Canadian.

... wait, what? You have no idea what I'm talking about? I... how... it's My Boys. It's on TBS.

It's funny, it's pretty smart, and I love the main character. PJ? I can relate to her and I want her friends. I love my friends but I would love to add hers to my roster.

I was reading a TV Guide recaplet about the show and she was complaining about how girly PJ was around this guy she was really interested in but I thought it was true to life. I've found a lot of girls who are in a predominantly male environment who, when faced with someone she's interested in, become a little more giggly than they would normally get.

Trust me; I've gotten "WTF" stares from my friends. It's like I grew a second head.

Anyway, suck on it TV Guide Canada reviewer. You have no idea what you're talking about, even though you like my show so thanks for helping it get advertising since it most likely doesn't get more than half a million viewers.

I'm sleepy so I've lost my mind.

What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall TV season?

It's kind of hard to say. I've been keeping away from any of the new show descriptions but the ones that have leaked through to me, I'm looking forward to Chuck, Reaper and Private Practice. Otherwise, eh.

I might buy the latest TV Guide that lists all the new shows but, I mean, I don't have cable. It would be more so I could live vicariously through other people.

What was the most embarrassing hobby you've ever had?

Embarrassing hobby? (I swear, I keep thinking "embarrass" should only have 1 "r") Hm. Well, I used to keep track of the tv shows I would tape and keep. It got to the point where I had a hard copy of each of them, how long each episode was and on what tape. That way, if I got tired of one episode, I would tape over it with a different episode of another tv show with one just as long so it wouldn't mess up my other recordings.

I don't know that it's so embarrassing though. I mean, isn't that why people have TIVO nowadays? And own TV series on dvd? I would actually say that I was a PIONEER! I was pioneering for those who love tv and wanted to keep it and watch it over and over again.

PIONEER!

Okay, yes, I just wanted to yell "pioneer" over and over again. I'm still not embarrassed by my video tapes.

What was your favorite TV season finale this year?

Supernatural. No... wait, Heroes. But damn, I haven't watched Veronica Mars yet! And I missed The Office (stupid extra long episodes with fucking extra long commercials) and How I Met Your Mother (because... well, I didn't watch tv that day and completely forgot, even though a very kind friend reminded me.)

Ooooh, but the Criminal Minds one was pretty good too. It wrapped the season neatly but it left some interesting intrigue open for the next year. And how could I forget CSI: NY? Mac, going all Die Hard in the NYPD on us! Awesome.
